Starting A Support Group

If you are interested in starting a support group you should consider the following:

  1. If there is already a support group in the county it may make sense to work with them as starting and maintaining a support group takes time and effort.

  2. If you don’t have a local support group then you should consider what your potential audience would be so you don’t spend time setting up the group and having little to no attendees for your meetings. Start by inquiring with local hospitals or gastroenterologists in your area to see if they are aware of a population of people with liver disease. Also, check with your county health department to see if they are aware of any support groups in the area or if they feel there is a need for a support group.

  3. Consider the HEP HelpTM of New Jersey Alliance Inc. “Support Group in a Box” guideline as a tool to help you get started. The toolkit will supply you with a wealth of information about many of the things you will need to consider and work on to make your support group successful.
